School Council
We have decided for the first time to keep our current councillors so that they have two years in office. This will allow the children time to develop their skills in their particular roles as we do have some exceptional children. The concept of school councils has been around for about 40 or so years, especially as citizenship is being taught in many schools and countries. It has caught on from school to school and although the government agree they are very important, it is not a compulsory option.
School councils are democratically elected groups of students who represent their peers and enable pupils to become partners in their own education, making a positive contribution to the school environment and ethos. This means the councillors have been elected by their class mates having agreed to be spokesperson for them. There are two in each year group.
The school council do many things: they meet at least once a month (with a teacher present) to discuss and sort out issues which may be related to school lunches, behaviour or things like fundraising. They are responsible for carrying out their agreed ideas ie planning school discos, writing an article for the school newsletter or having a meeting with members of staff about particular issues and much more.
There are four main roles: the chair, the vice-chair/deputy, the secretary and the treasurer all of whom have to be elected by the councillors themselves. It is essential that the councillors elected can truly represent the views of all students and that they get things done. They will be supported in their roles by the teacher and given clear guidelines about their roles and responsibilities.
The main aim of the school council is to contribute to the school community in some way by taking into account the views of the children.
